Here is a list of 19 nuggets I recently shared with several high school teams in L.A. and N.Y.C. as part of two separate Jordan Brand events. These concepts far exceed the basketball court and are just as applicable to business and life!

  1. Success is a result of consistently making good decisions compounded over time.
  2. Motivation is a feeling. Discipline is a decision. Discipline will always beat motivation over time.
  3. Do you make decisions based on principle or pleasure?
  4. What drives your decisions: What you want most or what you want now?
  5. You can only be consistent on the court if you are consistent off the court. Excellence is not a switch to turn on and off.
  6. Great players play with emotion but they aren’t emotional.
  7. Great players aren’t just good on game day, they are committed to being their best (and giving their best) EVERY day.
  8. Repetition is not punishment.
  9. Elite players make preparation their separation.
  10. Star in the role you have while you work for the role you want.
  11. Be the teammate you want to play with.
  12. Be fun to play with and hard to play against.
  13. If you’re the best player on your playground… you need to find a new playground.
  14. How do you behave on your ‘bad’ days?
  15. If you were to repeat how you behaved today for the next 364 days, how much progress would you make in a year?
  16. If everyone on your team had your work ethic and your attitude… would that be a good thing?
  17. Confidence comes from demonstrated performance, keeping the promises you make to yourself, and your self talk.
  18. The results you want will come from the work you’re currently not doing.
  19. Player led teams will go further than coach led teams in the long run.
