One of the most important choices you make every single day is how you show up — for yourself and for others.
You’re either an energy giver or an energy drainer. There’s no middle ground.
Energy givers make people feel seen, supported, and inspired. They elevate the temperature in the room — not by being loud or flashy, but by bringing a consistent, positive presence.
Energy drainers, on the other hand, pull people down. They’re quick to complain, slow to help, and always seem to find a reason why something can’t be done.
Every day, we get to decide which one we’ll be.
Start Where You Are — and Be Excellent at It
There’s a phrase I love: “Start where you are. Do what you can. Use what you have.”
It’s a reminder that greatness isn’t about where you work or what title you have — it’s about how you approach what’s right in front of you.
If you have a job, why not do it to the best of your ability?
How do you benefit from giving a poor effort, having a bad attitude, or being apathetic?
How could that possibly help you — or anyone around you?
We often chase the next opportunity, the next role, or the next promotion… but here’s the truth: how you do your current job is the best audition for your next one.
If you can’t take pride in doing small things with excellence, you’ll never be trusted with big things.
Improve Yourself — Don’t Just Try to Prove Yourself
Too many people get caught in the trap of trying to prove themselves — to their boss, their friends, social media, or the world at large. But real fulfillment comes from focusing on improving yourself instead.
Proving is external. It’s ego-driven.
Improving is internal. It’s growth-driven.
When you shift your focus from “How can I look successful?” to “How can I become better?” everything changes.
You start showing up differently. You take ownership of your effort, your attitude, and your energy.
And that’s when real progress happens.
Two People. One Lesson.
Just the other day, I had two interactions that perfectly illustrate this concept.
Person One worked at the post office. I had several questions because I was mailing out a massive batch of books. She was visibly annoyed and gave me minimal help. (For the record, I approached her at her job — I didn’t walk into her living room uninvited and start peppering her with questions!)
Person Two worked at my local Harris Teeter grocery store. It was 7 a.m., and I needed help finding an item after they’d reconfigured the entire store. This young employee smiled, walked me halfway across the store, and said, “I know exactly where that is — let me show you.”
Two different people. Two different energies.
One made me feel like a burden. The other made me feel like a priority.
Neither job title was glamorous, but only one of them was excellent.
How You Show Up Matters
Being an energy giver doesn’t mean you’re perfect, always upbeat, or relentlessly cheerful. It means you choose to show up with presence, purpose, and positivity — even when life feels heavy.
It means recognizing that how you treat people matters — because energy is contagious.
So today, and every day, ask yourself:
👉 Am I giving energy or draining it?
👉 Am I focused on proving myself or improving myself?
👉 Am I bringing excellence to what’s right in front of me?
You get to decide.
And that decision shapes how the world experiences you — and how you experience the world.
