If you have an iPhone, you know that every couple of months or so, Apple upgrades its OS. Why? To eliminate bugs and ensure your device runs smoothly as possible. That is a key to Apple’s success – they are never stagnate and they are always evolving.

In this post, I’m going to teach you how to do the same… how to consistently upgrade your mental operating system. Why? So you can break through plateaus, overcome stagnation, and skyrocket your business! And most importantly, you can lean into the framework of always becoming.

DISCLAIMER: the content in this post is basic. But as Kobe Bryant taught me in 2007… the best never get bored with the basics! And don’t ever forget – just because it’s basic, it doesn’t mean it’s easy!

So if any of the stuff below sounds familiar, remember, we often need to be reminded more than we need to be taught!

Here are the 5 sequential steps you need to take to continually refine, level up, and upgrade your mental OS:

  1. Believe
  2. Commit
  3. Prepare
  4. Execute
  5. Compete

  1. You have to believe. Believe in yourself. Believe in your company. Believe in your mission. Believe in your core values. Believe in your talent. Believe in your habits. Believe in abundance. Believe in your expertise. Believe in your experience. Believe in the work you’ve put in. Believe you DESERVE success.

With all else equal, the person with the highest sense of belief will win.

  1. You have to commit. Commit to excellence. Commit to your craft. Commit to your clients. Commit to your development. Commit to your self care. Commit to doing the little things. Commit to doing more than is required. Commit to your company culture. Commit to putting your clients first.  Commit to showing them you care. Commit to adding extra value. Commit to being consistent.

With all else equal, the person with the highest level of commitment will win.

  1. You have to prepare. Make your preparation your separation. Prepare your mind. Prepare for each call. Prepare for each meeting. Prepare for every client. Prepare during the Unseen Hours. Prepare for adversity.

With all else equal, the person who is the most prepared will win.

  1. You have to execute. It’s not what you say, it’s what you do that matters. They say knowledge is power. That’s incorrect and incomplete. Power comes from applied knowledge. You have to act. You have to implement. You have to execute. Execute on the small things. Execute on the big things. Execute at home. Execute at work. Execute the process. And please know, complexity undermines execution. So don’t make things any more complex than they need to be!

With all else equal, the person that executes most consistently will win.

  1. You have to compete. Compete with previous versions of yourself. Compete to be better than you were yesterday.  Compete to stack days. Compete in the process. Compete against benchmarks.

With all else equal, the person that competes the hardest will win.

If you believe, commit, prepare, execute, and compete – you will have the most efficient and effective mental operating system possible.

And that will be the foundation to which everything else is built.
