A few years ago, I was deep into one of those classic parenting days. You know the kind — my twin sons, Luke and Jack, were locked in a never-ending cycle of teasing, bickering, and pushing each other’s buttons. I was running low on patience, and after what felt like the hundredth warning, I snapped:
“Jack, knock it off. You’re irritating me.”
He smirked and said something that stopped me cold.
“Dad, I’m not irritating you. You’re choosing to be irritated.”
Touche, Jack. Touche.
And you know what? He was right.
That moment wasn’t about him — it was about me. I couldn’t control their arguing. But I could control my response to it.
That’s what this is all about. Winning the moment.
W.I.N. — What’s Important Now?
If you want to win in business, in leadership, in life… you need to constantly ask yourself:
Am I placing my attention on what is most deserving of it — right now?
That’s the foundation of being present. It’s also the key to performance, impact, and peace of mind.
I heard a powerful phrase from both Oprah and Coach Nick Saban — and if they’re both saying it, it’s good enough for me:
“Be where your feet are.”
It’s simple, but it’s not easy. Wherever your feet are, make sure your head and your heart are there too.
So how do we actually do that? Let’s break it down into three components.
1. Focus on the Next Play
When I worked with elite basketball players, one of my top priorities was helping them stay mentally in the game. And the cornerstone of that mindset?
Focus on the next play.
You just missed a layup?
You turned the ball over?
The ref blew the call?
It’s over. It’s unchangeable. You can’t go back and fix it — but you can choose how you respond. Because any energy you waste on what was… is energy you’re not using on what is.
That’s not just a basketball mindset. That’s a leadership mindset. A parenting mindset. A life mindset.
2. Control the Controllables
There are only two things we have 100% control over, 100% of the time:
✅ Our effort
✅ Our attitude
We don’t control what people say or do. We don’t control events or circumstances. But we always control our response.
I forgot that when I let myself get irritated with Jack and Luke. I gave away control.
But in that moment — with a smirk and a simple truth — my son reminded me: Dad, that was your choice.
3. Focus on the Process
I’m a huge believer in setting big goals. Dream big. Aim high. Set targets for your business, your relationships, your health — all of it.
But once your goals are set?
Take your eyes off the goal, and put them on the process.
Ask yourself:
👉 What’s the next action I can take?
👉 What’s the brick I need to lay today?
Because here’s the truth: You don’t build a wall by staring at the wall.
You build it one brick at a time. With precision. With consistency.
When you focus on the bricks, the wall takes care of itself.
Your Playbook to Win the Moment
So here it is — your simple framework to stay present and perform under pressure:
Next Play: Don’t dwell. Shift your focus forward.
Control the Controllables: Effort and attitude — own both.
Process over Outcome: Lay one perfect brick at a time.
Because if you want to win the moment…
You have to be in the moment.
So take a breath. Take a beat. And ask yourself:
“Am I focused on what matters most right now?”
That’s how you show up fully.
That’s how you lead intentionally.
And that’s how you Raise Your Game.
