Reflective questions leaders must constantly internalize and recalibrate:
- Do I have the right people on my team?
- Do I have them in the right positions?
Whether in sports or business, after clearly articulating the vision, a leader’s primary job is to find out what each member of the team does really well… and how to best utilize that skill set for the team’s benefit.
In order to maximize organizational performance, each team member’s strengths must fill the team’s needs. In other words, it’s not enough to just have the right people – you need the right people in the right positions.
Many teams have the right people in the wrong positions (which often leads to unmotivated, unhappy, and disengaged team members).
Oh, and if you have the wrong people… then it doesn’t matter what position they’re in.
Once you have the right people in the right positions, a leader needs to make sure that everyone on the team knows their role, understands their role, embraces their role, and is committed to starring in their role (no matter what that role is).

Here are 3 questions everyone in your organization and on your team needs to answer with great clarity:
- What do we believe? How do we express it?
- What makes us unique? What do we do really well?
- What can we do better? What is our biggest challenge?

Working to become your best self is not easy. It’s OK if you need some help. In fact, I recommend you get some help!
You need to find:
Someone that gives you energy.
Someone that holds you accountable.
Someone who supports your vision.
Someone that encourages you.
Someone that tells you what you need to hear – not what you want to hear.
Do you have a person like this in your life?
If so, make sure you tell them how much you appreciate you them.
If not, you need to find a person like that ASAP!

Overtime: October 2020
This past Monday I hiked from rim-to-rim of the Grand Canyon. It was an epic experience!
It took me 5 hours to descend from the North Rim (first 15 miles) and 4 hours and 20 minutes to ascend 10 miles to the top of the South Rim (I finished the 25 miles in 9 hours and 20 minutes).
This was no easy feat… but so worth it. Being in the Canyon was magical. Of the 6 million people that visit each year, less than 1% go all the way to the bottom.
Hiking the Grand Canyon is analogous to life for these 7 reasons:
- There are hard parts and easy parts… there are dark parts and beautiful parts. Each adds immeasurable value and broadens your perspective.
- Experiences are always better when shared with others.
- If it doesn’t serve you in a positive way, don’t say it to yourself. Avoid negative, pessimistic, or undermining self-talk.
- When it comes to challenging and daunting tasks… don’t just try to get THROUGH it… aim to get FROM it. Emerge as a better version of yourself.
- Always run your own race (or hike your own hike!). Don’t play the comparison game. You do you.
- Things always turn out better – and are much more enjoyable – when you are fully prepared.
- It’s important to stay focused and keep your eyes on the path, but it’s equally important to make time to look up and enjoy the scenery!
